Secretory carcinoma of the breast: Clinicopathologic profile of 14 cases emphasizing distant metastatic potential
Histopathology Apr 26, 2019
Hoda RS, et al. - Researchers examined 14 cases of secretory carcinoma of the breast (SCB), comprising 12 women and 2 men, with a median age of 56 years (range, 8-81 years), to determine the clinical, pathological and molecular findings as well as features related to aggressive clinical courses. The clinical data, histologic diagnosis, molecular findings and follow-up of the participants were studied. Palpable masses were present on presentation in 8 patients and 4 presented with radiographic abnormalities. Unilateral involvement was seen in all cases. Excisional biopsies and ipsilateral mastectomies were included in the surgical procedures. Although a favorable prognosis is generally carried by SCBs, distant metastases may be seen in a subset of SCBs. Amplification of the 16p13.3 locus, a TERT promotor mutation and loss of 9p21.3 locus, was evident in molecular analysis of aggressive tumors.
