Secondhand smoke exposure and risk of obstructive sleep apnea in children
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Dec 07, 2019
Subramanyam R, Tapia IE, Zhang B, et al. - Among children aged 3 to 18 years, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. Around January 24, 2015, and January 24, 2018, electronic medical records (EMR) are reviewed to obtain data on SHS exposure from the perioperative database using standard questionnaires. According to this retrospective single center IRB-approved study, EMR query yielded 101,884 children, 3,776 of whom had PSG. Median obstructive apnea hypopnea index (OAHI) was significantly higher in SHS exposed vs non-exposed among children with severe OSA, but not across all children. Children aged 3-18 years with severe OSA exposure to SHS were found to have 1.48 higher odds of OAHI compared with those without exposure to SHS. Outcomes could be constrained by the retrospective nature of the study and EMR tools.
