Secondary prevention and lifestyle indices after stroke in a long-term perspective
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica May 09, 2018
Jonsson AC, et al. - This purpose of this study was to characterize the long-term outlook regarding the incidence of risk factors, secondary stroke prevention, and lifestyle indices after stroke. Experts analyzed survivors at 16 months and 10 years after stroke (age 27-97 years) in terms of reaching acceptable treatment goals, nutritional status with focus on underweight, and lifestyle indices, including living situation, level of dependence, and self-assessed health condition. According to results, 50% of the subjects with hypertension diagnosis and 55% of those without hypertension diagnosis were within the blood pressure goal <140/90 at 10 years compared with 32% at 16 months. Over time, the number of patients within treatment goals increased over time, but secondary prevention still needed to be considered even 10 years after stroke.
