Second primary malignancy in patients with cholangiocarcinoma: A population-based study
Cancer Management and Research Mar 08, 2019
Zhuang L, et al. - Researchers examined the risk factors related to second primary malignancy (SPM) in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), as well as if SPM has any impact on overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) in CCA cases. They noted significantly greater risk (overall) of SPM in CCA cases. Significantly increased risk was also noted at specific sites like transverse colon, intrahepatic bile duct, other biliary, and thyroid. They recorded an association of not having undergone surgery for the first primary malignancy with significantly decreased risk of SPM. They found better OS and DSS among SPM cases vs those without SPM.
