Second primary cancers in non-Hodgkin lymphoma: Family history and survival
International Journal of Cancer May 08, 2019
Chattopadhyay S, et al. - Researchers evaluated how the risk of second primary cancers (SPCs) was influenced by family history and how survival was impacted by SPCs in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). They used the Swedish Family-Cancer Database on NHL. Of 14,393 NHL patients, 1,866 (13.0%) received the diagnosis of SPC. With between 2 and 5-fold increases in RRs, familial risk of nine specific cancers were related to risks of these cancers as SPCs. The chance of survival for persons with SPC, as reported at the end of a 25-year follow-up, was only 20% of that for patients without SPC. In NHL patients, SPCs had deleterious results for survival. Increasing numbers of SPCs were reported in relation to family history. To achieve improved survival in NHL patients, early detection and prevention of SPCs is crucial.
