Seasonal variations in cardiac implantable electronic device infections
Heart and Vessels Nov 15, 2018
Maille B, et al. - Via retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, researchers investigated if there is a seasonal variation in cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections in this single-center observational study. Participants were all consecutive patients with CIED extractions for infectious reasons. Over a 12-year period, they were examined with respect to the mean temperature (°C), precipitation (mm) and the incidence of CIED infections. In this study, regardless of the association with endocarditis, a seasonal variation in pocket infections was evident. Data also revealed the association of infections with elevated temperatures and precipitation. Based on these findings, discussing specific prevention strategy in high-risk patients was recommended.
