Seasonal malaria vaccination with or without seasonal malaria chemoprevention
New England Journal of Medicine Aug 30, 2021
Chandramohan D, Zongo I, Sagara I, et al. - Findings suggest non inferiority of seasonal vaccination with RTS,S/AS01E to chemoprevention in preventing uncomplicated malaria.
An individually randomized, controlled trial of 6,861 children 5 to 17 months of age.
Children were administered either sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine and amodiaquine (2,287 children [chemoprevention-alone group]), RTS,S/AS01E (2,288 children [vaccine-alone group]), or chemoprevention and RTS,S/AS01E (2,286 children [combination group]).
A substantially lower incidence of uncomplicated malaria, severe malaria, and death from malaria was observed when the interventions were applied in combination vs solely.
