Screening young adult cancer survivors with the PROMIS Depression Short Form (PROMIS-D-SF): Comparison with a structured clinical diagnostic interview
Cancer Jan 29, 2020
Recklitis CJ, et al. - Researchers compared Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Depression Short Form (PROMIS-D-SF), vs a structured diagnostic interview, as a screening measure for young adult cancer survivors (YACS). The PROMIS-D-SF and Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (SCID), was completed by 249 YACS (aged 18-40 years). Grouping of the participants was done depending on the SCID: those having a SCID depression diagnosis; those with depression symptoms without a SCID diagnosis; and those with no depression symptoms. Findings revealed a moderately strong concordance of PROMIS-D-SF with SCID with regard to depressive diagnoses and symptoms measured, however, cutoff t-scores did not meet study criteria for clinical screening. The likely usefulness of PROMIS-D-SF for evaluating depression in YACS was suggested, however, there were limitations in its sensitivity and specificity which possibly limit its utility as a stand-alone screening tool in this population.
