Screening and treatment for osteoporosis after stroke: Results from the Ontario Stroke Registry
Stroke Jun 01, 2019
Kapoor E, et al. - Since stroke is a risk factor for ensuing osteoporosis and fractures, researchers assessed bone loss after stroke in terms of current rates and predictors of screening and treatment. Patients ≥65 years who were seen in the emergency department or hospitalized with stroke at 11 regional stroke centers in Ontario, Canada and discharged alive were identified in the Ontario Stroke Registry from July 1, 2003 to March 31, 2013. In this sample of 16,581 patients, recent stroke patients are rarely screened and treated for osteoporosis, which can raise the risk of fractures. Higher rates of osteoporosis pharmacotherapy were associated with female sex, pre-stroke osteoporosis, and post-stroke falls and fractures.
