Screening and treating preoperative anaemia and suboptimal iron stores in elective colorectal surgery: A cost effectiveness analysis
Anaesthesia Feb 10, 2021
Trentino KM, Mace HS, Symons K, et al. - Researchers assessed the cost-effectiveness of preoperative screening as well as treatment for anaemia and suboptimal iron stores in a patient blood management clinic. They utilized data from a retrospective cohort analysis comparing colorectal surgery patients admitted prior to as well as following the execution of a preoperative screening programme. The mean expense of screening as well as treating preoperative anaemia was estimated to be AU$332 (£183; US$231; €204) per screened patient. Findings revealed that a decrease in the number of red cell units transfused was achieved by screening elective patients preoperatively for anaemia and suboptimal iron stores. This intervention also led to lower total expenses vs not screening patients, and therefore showed cost effectiveness.
