Scoring hypoechogenic areas in one parotid and one submandibular gland increases feasibility of ultrasound in primary Sjögren’s syndrome
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Dec 21, 2017
Mossel E, et al. - This study was implemented to examine if classifying patients as primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) requires ultrasonographic scoring of both parotid and submandibular salivary glands and all individual components of the Hocevar scoring system. Findings reported adequacy of ultrasound examination of the major salivary glands (sUS), particularly of parotid and submandibular glands on one side to predict classification of patients according to the American College of Rheumatology-European League Against Rheumatism (ACR-EULAR) criteria. Furthermore, it was suggested that only hypoechogenic areas can be scored to further increase the feasibility of sUS in outpatient clinics worldwide.
