Scoliosis in Duchenne muscular dystrophy children is fully reducible in the initial stage, and becomes structural over time
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Jun 13, 2019
Choi YA, et al. - The medical records of 273 non-ambulant patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) were evaluated by the authors in order to investigate the flexibility of scoliosis in these patients. To obtain Cobb angle, curve flexibility, and pelvic obliquity, spine radiographs in sitting and supine positions were reviewed. in those who developed scoliosis the first year, a flexibility decreased with each year following detection of scoliosis. At the initial stage of scoliosis, a period of fully reducible curve in DMD patients was seen. As spinal curve progresses, decreased flexibility is noted. Scoliosis curve in DMD patients should be evaluated dynamically, with radiographs of at least in two different positions, for the detection of scoliosis when the curve is fully reducible.
