Sciatic obturator femoral technique vs spinal anaesthesia in patients undergoing surgery for fixation of open tibial fractures using Ilizarov external fixator: A randomised trial
BMC Anesthesiology Jan 10, 2020
Shokri H, et al. - Among patients (n = 107) undergoing an operation for fixation of open tibial fractures using Ilizarov external fixator, researchers performed this inquiry to compare the efficacy as well as the safety of SOFT block (sciatic-obturator-femoral technique) vs spinal anaesthesia. Patients were administered spinal anaesthesia with hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.5% (7. 5-10mg) in spinal anaesthesia group. SOFT block with bupivacaine 0.25% was delivered in SOFT group. The duration of analgesia was assessed as the primary endpoint. Findings revealed a significantly longer duration of SOFT block and time to first analgesic dose in SOFT group. At 3,6,12 h postoperatively, significantly lower pain scores were reported in the SOFT group. This group also had a significantly longer time to the first effect. Findings revealed the feasibility of SOFT as a technique of local anaesthesia for control of postoperative pain with unremarkable adverse events, vs spinal anaesthesia, in this patient population.
