Scabies is strongly associated with acute rheumatic fever in a cohort study of Auckland children
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Feb 22, 2018
Thornley S, et al. - Experts attempted to analyze if scabies infection correlated with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) or chronic rheumatic heart disease (CRHD) in children aged 3–12 years. Data illustrated that children diagnosed with scabies during follow-up appeared to be 23 times more likely to develop ARF or CRHD, than children who had no scabies diagnosis. A strong connection was disclosed between a recent diagnosis of scabies from hospital records with a subsequent diagnosis of ARF.
