SAVE-CLC: An intervention to reduce suicide risk in older Veterans following discharge from VA nursing facilities
Clinical Gerontologist Oct 20, 2019
Luci K, Simons K, Hagemann L, et al. - Researchers planned and implemented a telephonic intervention (SAVE-CLC) piloted at three VA sites for reducing suicide risk in Veterans returning to the community from VA nursing facilities (Community Living Centers or “CLCs”), given these people carry an elevated risk for suicide vs age and gender matched controls. They collected input from key stakeholders, using a quality improvement approach, to assist in the development of the intervention. Phone was used as a tool to screen Veterans for depressive symptoms and requirement for additional support. Across multiple outpatient settings, the feasibility of this intervention was suggested. Veterans and caregivers generally well-received the intervention. The telephone calls were reported helpful by 97% of those contacted. The unmet requirement of combining mental health care into discharge planning during care transitions was addressed by this flexible, telephone-based intervention.
