Saturated fatty acid intake is associated with total mortality in a nationwide cohort study
The Journal of Nutrition Jan 09, 2019
Zhuang P, et al. - In this prospective analysis with 14 years of follow-up, researchers examined the associations of total and individual saturated fatty acid (SFA) intakes with total mortality among 7,888 women and 6,495 men (aged > 20 years) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1989–2011) via multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. Calculation of cumulative mean of SFA intake was done on the basis of 3 days of 24-hour records in each round of the survey. During follow-up, 1,011 deaths were documented. Findings revealed that total SFA and even-chain SFA intake were related to higher total mortality in women, whereas lower total mortality was reported in association with intake of odd-chain SFAs in both sexes. For total SFAs and for even-chain SFAs, the respective HRs (95% CIs) in the highest quartiles vs in the lowest quartiles were 1.65 and 1.83 in women.
