Sarcopenia is independently associated with parietal atrophy in older adults
Experimental Gerontology May 13, 2021
Hsu YH, Liang CK, Chou MY, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective cohort study to examine links between sarcopenia and brain atrophy among older adults as well as associations with regional brain areas. Participants were 102 retirement community residents aged 65 years and older. Among participants, 47 (46.1%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia based on Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. In this first study addressing links between sarcopenia and global as well as regional brain atrophy in older adults, higher rates of moderate to severe parietal atrophy (PA), global cortical atrophy and medial temporal atrophy were observed in the sarcopenia group vs the non-sarcopenia group. Findings demonstrated a significant link of PA with sarcopenia among older adults.
