Sarcomatoid carcinoma in the parotid gland: A review of 30 years of experience
The Laryngoscope Apr 25, 2019
Niu X - The consequence of clinical treatment of sarcomatoid carcinoma in the parotid gland was explored in 35 candidates. Authors noted that most of the cases were staged as tumor (T)3 or T4. They observed perineural invasion in 15 patients whereas 42.9% of the cases received neck dissection for clinically suspicious nodes including 3 candidates with pathologically positive nodes. Recurrence was reported in 14 subjects and local recurrence was the frequently observed pattern of treatment failure. Only 40% of the participants were able to receive salvaged surgical treatment. The most important predictive factor was perineural invasion whereas parotid sarcomatoid carcinoma carried a poor prognosis.
