Same-day discharge among patients undergoing elective PCI: Insights from the VA CART program
American Heart Journal Sep 20, 2019
Rymer JA, O'Donnell CI, Plomondon ME, et al. - Researchers analyzed trends of same-day discharge (SDD) after elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in a universal healthcare system like the Veterans Affairs Health System (VAHS), focusing on contemporary adoption rates, safety (30-day rates of readmission, mortality), and costs. They used data from the Veterans Affairs Clinical Assessment Reporting and Tracking Program linked with Health Economics Resource Center data. Increased adoption of SDD for elective PCI procedures in VAHS was reported. SDD adoption in VAHS was found to be related to cost savings without a rise in readmission or mortality. Costs may potentially be attenuated, without increasing adverse outcomes, with greater adoption of SDD.
