Salvage following transoral laser microsurgery for early glottic cancer in national veteran database
The Laryngoscope Jul 29, 2021
Voora RS, Panuganti B, Flagg M, et al. - Given transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) is often used to treat early glottic cancer and provides favorable oncologic and functional results, but the survival implications of salvage therapy for recurrent or persistent disease have not been definitively described, so, to explore this, researchers undertook this retrospective, national database cohort study. They obtained the relevant data from Veterans Health Affairs Informatics and Computing Infrastructure. This analysis involved approximately 553 patients (70.9% T1a, 13.4% T1b, 15.7% T2) who were observed for a median follow-up time of 74.5 months. Findings revealed that additional salvage therapy was not needed in most of the cases of early glottic cancer that were managed with TLM. When non-TLM salvage was needed, no decrement in overall survival or cancer-specific survival was seen.
