Salivary clear cell carcinoma clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes: A population-based analysis
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jun 05, 2019
Sharbel DD, et al. - Researchers sought to determine disease-specific survival (DSS) and predictive clinicopathologic factors of salivary clear cell carcinoma, an uncommon, low-grade malignancy. Searching the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 1982 to 2014, they identified 198 patients with salivary clear cell carcinoma. Overall incidence of 0.011 per 100 000 individuals was identified. Outcomes revealed 5-, 10-, and 20-year DSS rates of 81.3% (n = 117), 69.6% (n = 94), and 55.3% (n = 68), respectively. A worse prognosis was noted to be a correlation to the male gender and having regional or distant metastases. Patients with localized disease had greater five-year DSS than those with regional or distant metastases. Better 10-year DSS was noted with treatment with surgery alone (86.3%) compared with treatment with combination radiation and surgery (57.6%) or radiation monotherapy (18.75%).
