Saline alone vs saline plus mannitol hydration for the prevention of acute cisplatin nephrotoxicity: A randomized trial.
Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 25, 2018
Beeler B, et al. - In patients receiving cisplatin, experts ascertained the impacts of pre-hydration with mannitol vs normal saline pre-hydration for reducing the risk of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. They identified and randomized 50 patients eligible to receive chemotherapy with cisplatin chemotherapy to receive 1L saline alone or saline plus mannitol before and after chemotherapy. In patients receiving cisplatin, acute nephrotoxicity is not prevented by mannitol. In patients treated with cisplatin, this underscores the importance of adequate hydration. An acute decline in renal function was caused by cisplatin as assessed by serum creatinine, BUN to serum creatinine ratio, and GFR, nonetheless, the outcome did not change with the addition of mannitol to NS pre-hydration.
