Safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of oral zonisamide therapy in comparison with intramuscular adrenocorticotropic hormone therapy in infants with West syndrome
European Journal of Paediatric Neurology Sep 27, 2018
Angappan D, et al. - In infants with West syndrome, researchers assessed the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of oral zonisamide therapy vs adrenocorticotropic hormone therapy. For this investigation, 30 infants with West syndrome were randomly allocated to receive either synthetic, intramuscular adrenocorticotropic hormone (30-60IU) or oral zonisamide (4-25mg/kg/day). The data presented in this randomized, open-label, pilot study showed a poor efficacy of both adrenocorticotropic hormone and zonisamide therapy, most likely because of long treatment lag and a high amount of structural etiology. The study findings suggested that oral zonisamide seemed to be safe and tolerable.
