Safety of thoracentesis and tube thoracostomy in patients with uncorrected coagulopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Chest May 03, 2021
Fong C, Tan CWC, Tan DKY, et al. - Researchers undertook this systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether performing thoracentesis and tube thoracostomy is safe in patients with uncorrected coagulopathy. They explored PubMed and Embase to identify studies including patients with uncorrected coagulopathy because of disease (e.g. thrombocytopenia, liver cirrhosis, kidney failure) or drugs (e.g. antiplatelets, anticoagulants). Overall, 18 studies (5,134 procedures) were analyzed. Findings revealed that the occurrence of major bleeding and mortality complications was uncommon in patients with uncorrected coagulopathy who underwent thoracentesis or tube thoracostomy. Based on the results of this study, thoracentesis or tube thoracostomy can be safely conducted in appropriately selected patients.
