Safety of sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass after surgery in patients with severe obesity
JAMA Dec 13, 2021
Howard R, Chao GF, Yang J, et al. - Analyzing the long-term comparative safety of sleeve gastrectomy vs gastric bypass, it was noted that the safety benefits of sleeve gastrectomy persisted up to 5 years post-surgery. This observation could assist patients and surgeons make informed treatment decisions.
In this cohort study of a national sample of 95,405 Medicare beneficiaries who underwent bariatric surgery, sleeve gastrectomy was found to be linked with a lower risk of mortality, complications, and overall reintervention 5 years post-surgery, vs gastric bypass group.
However, a higher risk of surgical revision was observed in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy.
Understanding the comparative safety of these operations could better inform patients as well as surgeons in their decision-making.
