Safety of single-site laparoscopic surgery requiring perioperative heparinization in colorectal cancer: Propensity score-matched analysis
Annals of Surgical Oncology Sep 13, 2019
Iwamoto K, Takahashi H, Fujii M, et al. - Single-site laparoscopic surgery was evaluated for its feasibility and safety in patients with colorectal cancer who required perioperative heparinization. In this retrospective study, the medical records of 390 eligible patients were reviewed. Preoperative stopping of antithrombotic drugs and administration of heparin according to the operative risk of each patient were done, based on consultation with the cardiologist physician or neurosurgeon. Following propensity matching, 119 patients were identified: 22 patients in the heparinization group and 97 in the control group. The heparinization group vs control group had the mean postoperative hospital stay of 17.9 days and 9.5 days and had postoperative bleeding in 4 patients (18.2%) and 11 patients (11.4%), respectively. Findings support single-site laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer with heparinization as feasible and safe and suggest that heparinization led to no increase in the risk of postoperative bleeding complications, but results in prolongation of postoperative hospital stay.
