Safety of prolonged wait time for gastrectomy in clinical stage I gastric cancer
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jun 14, 2019
Fujiya K, et al. - As stage I gastric cancer patients tend to wait for surgery despite the possibility of cancer progression during such a delay, researchers sought to determine how wait time for surgery influence the survival of these patients. They retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of 556 patients who underwent gastrectomy for clinical stage I gastric cancer. The patients had the median wait time of 72 days. The short- (<61 days, n = 185), intermediate- (61–90 days, n = 218), and long-wait (91–180 days, n = 153) groups had comparable overall survival; their 5-year overall survival was 90.2%, 93.6%, and 88.8%, respectively. Observations suggest no independent association of a half-year wait time for surgery with survival of patients with clinical stage I gastric cancer and hence it may be acceptable.
