Safety of outpatient admission and comparison of different surgical techniques in adult tonsillectomy
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Feb 15, 2019
Sancaktar ME, et al. - A total of 276 candidates were estimated to examine the safety of outpatient admission and the consequences of surgical technique in tonsillectomy operations of cases aged ≥ 15 years between years 2014 and 2018. The surgical techniques used were bipolar scissors (CURIS, Sutter Medizintechnik, Germany), cold dissection and/or plasma blade (PEAK Surgical, Medtronic, USA) and the most common indication was recurrent tonsillitis. They recorded 43 re-admissions. Among them, 13.4% of cases were registered because of bleeding and/or odynodysphagia. They noted a significant incline in rates of elongated length of stay (LOS) values for more than 1 day and re-admissions after discharge in those candidates having complications in the first 24 h postoperatively. They preferred cold dissection as compared to hot techniques for outpatient tonsillectomy among adult patients.
