Safety of intravenous thrombolysis for acute stroke in patients with an active malignancy: Case series and review of the literature
European Neurology Aug 31, 2019
Alberte-Woodward M, et al. - In patients with an active malignancy, researchers analyzed the safety of alteplase for acute stroke. For patients with both conditions treated at the investigators’ institution over a period of 2 years, medical records were reviewed. Five patients were identified, of whom 1 developed asymptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage, and no systemic bleedings. Functional results and severity of the stroke, as measured by National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and modified Rankin Scale, were beneficial after discharge. For patients with active cancer and acute stroke, intravenous alteplase may be a reasonable option in the lack of active bleeding or known central nervous system malignancy.
