Safety of hospital discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery
British Journal of Surgery Apr 03, 2020
EuroSurg Collaborative, et al. - Researchers examined if hospital discharge before the return of bowel function is safe via performing a prospective, multicentre cohort study across an international collaborative network. From January to April 2018, they identified 3,288 patients for inclusion in the analysis. Of these, 301 (9·2%) were discharged before the return of bowel function. No significant differences in terms of readmission rates and postoperative complication rates were observed between those discharged before vs after return of bowel function. These findings suggest the safety of performing discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery in appropriately selected patients.
