Safety and treatment completion of latent tuberculosis infection treatment in elderly population- A prospective observational study in Taiwan
International Journal of Infectious Diseases May 20, 2020
Feng JY, Huang WC, Lin SM, et al. - Given the significance of detection and treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI) in eliminating TB, researchers sought to attain insight on safety and on interrupting treatment in elderly LTBI patients. Four hundred six LTBI cases (167 elderly and 239 young cases) who underwent preventive therapy were included in this multi-center, prospective observational study. Per observations, elderly (≥ 60 years old) and young (< 60 years old) LTBI cases experienced systemic adverse reactions (SARs) similarly. SARs were observed in independent correlation with middle-age (35-59 years old), BMI < 23, 3HP (three months of once-weekly rifapentine and isoniazid) regimen, and end stage renal disease. Higher treatment interruption rate was reported among extremely old (≥ 80 years old) LTBI cases, especially when they had SARs.
