Crowson MG, et al. - Herein, a national pediatric surgical database was used to evaluate the preoperative risk factors, postoperative 30-day outcomes and adverse events of acute mastoiditis. In children, contemporary surgical management of acute mastoiditis appeared to be safe. Researchers noted mortality to be rare and was potentially eliminated as a complication. Despite current antibiotic utilization trends, rates of pre-operative systemic infection were very high. As mastoidectomy was used in about two-thirds of cases, its role appeared to be prominent.
