Safety and outcome of percutaneous drainage of pericardial effusions in patients with cancer
American Journal of Cardiology Jun 28, 2018
Lekhakul A, et al. - Researchers investigated the safety and outcome of pericardiocentesis in cancer patients with pericardial effusions. They identified and studied all patients with malignancy that underwent pericardiocentesis at their institution over a 10-year period. Findings demonstrated the technical success of the procedure in 170/171 (99.4%) of patients without significant complications, and there were no procedure-related deaths reported. Overall, findings highlighted the safety as well as the efficacy of echo-guided pericardiocentesis with extended pericardial catheter placement in cancer patients with pericardial effusions. However, those that required drainage exhibited poor overall outcomes, especially in those with carcinoma or sarcoma.
