Safe egg yolk consumption after a negative result for low‐dose egg oral food challenge
Pediatric Allergy and Immunology Oct 14, 2020
Yanagida N, Sato S, Takahashi K, et al. - Given that consuming heated egg yolk slightly contaminated with egg white (EY with scEW) improves diet quality, researchers conducted this prospective study to test the safety of EY with scEW consumption after a negative result of low‐dose egg oral food challenge (OFC). The sample consisted of children aged < 18 years with a history of immediate reaction to eggs. They assessed 276 children, median age 1.2 years, with negative outcomes for low‐dose egg OFC who had previously shown reactivity to eggs. While a few children with egg allergies have mild symptoms, most of them will eventually eat EY with scEW. Consumption of EY with scEW after low‐dose egg OFC appears safe and may enhance their quality of life by making egg yolk products available.
