Routinely staging gastric cancer with 18F-FDG PET-CT detects additional metastases and predicts early recurrence and death after surgery
European Radiology Apr 06, 2019
Findlay JM, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers determined the contemporary utility of routine 18F-FDG PET-CT in gastric cancer. Detection of incurable disease was the primary endpoint. Disease-free survival following gastrectomy was the secondary endpoint. The study sample consisted of 279 patients routinely staged with PET-CT in the absence of metastases on CT. Findings suggested that PET-CT seems to be useful when routinely used for non-junctional gastric cancer and should be taken into account in international recommendations. By avoiding futile investigations and radical treatment, any additional costs appear small and offset. Patients at risk of early recurrence and death are identified in the metabolic nodal stage.
