Routine use of optical coherence tomography in bioresorbable vascular scaffold implantation: Insights on technique optimization and long-term outcomes

Coronary Artery Disease May 04, 2019

Abdelaziz HK, et al. - By analyzing data from 86 patients who received ABSORB bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS), researchers analyzed the long-term consequences with routine use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for optimization of BVS implantation. All cases underwent OCT before and after the implantation. Participants were followed-up for a mean duration of 31±7.1 months. They found no cases of cardiac mortality, target vessel myocardial infarction, ischemia-driven target lesion revascularization, or scaffold thrombosis. Complex coronary lesion (type B2/C) was identified, in the multivariate regression analysis, as an independent predictor of OCT use in scaffold optimization. Based on these findings, OCT use for optimization of BVS implantation may be considered by the operators, especially in cases with complex coronary lesions.
