Routine scrubbing reduced central line associated bloodstream infection in NICU
American Journal of Infection Control Apr 22, 2020
Oh Y, et al. - Researchers investigated the effectiveness of routine scrubbing by change of the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Routine scrubbing means scrubbing twice daily the sites found more bacteria. Cultures from the NICU environment in December 2017 were surveyed. Areas close to infants harboring more bacteria were identified. Routine scrubbing was implemented to control sites with the most bacteria starting from January 2018. The data between the pre (2017) and post (2018) intervention periods were retrospectively reviewed and compared. Assessment of a total of 916 infants was done; among these, 10 CLABSI episodes occurred, 9 and 1 episodes in the pre- and postintervention periods, respectively. Significant reduction in CLABSI occurred in correlation with implementation of routine scrubbing in the NICU.
