Routine postprocedure ultrasound increases rate of detection of femoral arterial thrombosis in infants after cardiac catheterization
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 20, 2019
Kamyszek RW, et al. - In this review of 270 patients, 0-12 months old, who underwent 509 catheterizations from 2007 to 2016, researchers determined the impacts of postcatheterization ultrasound (US) use on femoral arterial thrombosis detection rates and factors related to thrombosis. The thrombosis and non-thrombosis group was compared for demographics and procedural data. With respect to detected thrombosis rate, comparisons were performed between pre- and post-US groups. Univariate and multivariable analyses were used. Implementation of a US screening program led to higher rates of femoral arterial thrombosis detection. Factors that showed independent relation to higher odds of thrombosis were lower weight, larger arterial sheath size, and longer procedure duration.
