Routine management of postoperative delirium outside the ICU: Results of an international survey among anaesthesiologists
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jan 24, 2020
Bilotta F, Weiss B, Neuner B, et al. - Given postoperative delirium (POD) represents a severe brain dysfunction, and despite a suggested high relevance, no survey inquiring the routine practice to monitor delirium outside the ICU setting post-surgery has been conducted, so, researchers performed European Society of Anaesthesiology-endorsed online survey prior to publishing of the new European Society of Anaesthesiology guidelines on POD in order to evaluate current practice. The participants included 566 respondents from 62 countries; among these, 564 (99.6%) completed the survey (completion rate). Overall, performing routine monitoring for delirium in > 50% of all patients was reported by 38 (7%) of the respondents. Findings revealed that although anaesthesiologists viewed delirium as a relevant condition, the need for implementing monitoring strategies after publishing of the POD Guideline remains high. Findings also showed the availability of tools required for POD Guideline implementation in the centres represented by the respondents.
