Routine management of postoperative delirium outside the ICU: Results of an international survey among anaesthesiologists
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jan 30, 2020
Bilotta F, Weiss B, Neuner B, et al. - An international survey was performed before the publishing of the new European Society of Anaesthesiology guidelines on postoperative delirium (POD), to gauge the current practice, given the routine practice to monitor delirium outside the ICU setting post-surgery has not been investigated in any survey. Participants were 566 respondents from 62 countries, of whom, 564 (99.6%) completed the survey (completion rate). Delirium was cited as either “very relevant” or “relevant” for daily clinical practice by 385 (68%) of the respondents. Performing routine monitoring for delirium in > 50% of all patients was reported by 38 (7%) of the respondents. Despite the finding that anaesthesiologists viewed delirium as a relevant condition, a high need for implementing monitoring strategies following the publishing of the POD Guideline was reported. In the centres represented by the respondents, the availability of tools required for POD Guideline implementation was reported.
