Routine gastric residual volume measurement and energy target achievement in the PICU: A comparison study

Tume LN, et al. - A comparative exploration was carried out of the routine gastric residual volume (GRV) measurement and energy target achievement in children admitted to the European Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs). No marked impairment was noted in the energy targets in the first 4 days of PICU admission through the practice of routine gastric residual measurement. Nonetheless, not estimating the GRV did not increase vomiting, ventilator-acquired pneumonia or necrotising enterocolitis. This presented as the primary reason clinicians cited for measuring GRV.
