Role of the ultrasonographic 'whirlpool sign' in intestinal volvulus: A systematic review and meta-analysis
ANZ Journal of Surgery May 16, 2018
Enyuma COA, et al. - Researchers sought to review the clinical reliability of the ultrasonographic whirlpool sign (WS) in the diagnosis of intestinal volvulus. In adherence with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analyses) statement, they performed a systematic search of BMJ Best Practice, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, EMBASE, Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases (August 2017), using relevant search terms. This review and meta-analysis supports the reliability of the ultrasonographic WS as an acceptable indicator of intestinal volvulus, despite the pooled sensitivity was less than ideal (87.42%).
