Russo A, et al. - This study dealt with the analysis of oral nystatin prophylaxis in cardiac surgery in terms of its exclusive effect on Candida, in the absence of systemic effects and selection of resistant strains to polyene. The observation made was that oral nystatin prophylaxis, in patients who underwent an extracorporeal circulation (ECC) >120 minutes, appeared to reduce the development of candidemia. Nevertheless, the real efficacy of such prophylaxis approach needed advanced research.
