Role of lymph node ratio in selection of adjuvant treatment (chemotherapy vs chemoradiation) in patients with resected gastric cancer

Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology Jul 24, 2018

Jabo B, et al. - Experts compared the survival outcomes based on lymph node ratio (LNR), which is the ratio of metastatic to harvested lymph nodes (LNs), for patients with gastric and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma treated with surgery and either chemotherapy (CT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Study participants were 1,493 patients diagnosed with stage IB–III gastric/GEJ adenocarcinoma and treated with CT or CRT following total or partial gastrectomy. A simple and readily available measure was found in LNR and it could be used in treatment planning for resected gastric cancer. Among patients with high LN disease burden (LNR of ≥10%), a significant survival advantage was offered by CRT over CT.
