Role of human papillomavirus in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma: A meta-analysis of cohort study
Cancer Medicine Nov 26, 2019
Wang H, Wei J, Wang B, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, to assess the prognosis, especially overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS), in relation to human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). On the basis of histopathology, LSCC was verified, whereas polymerase chain reaction confirmed HPV status. From 8 databases, they initially identified 6,539 articles, of which 11 studies were eligible for this review. This analysis included 1,442 LSCC cases. From the 8 studies, the pooled hazard ratio was 0.29 (95% CI: 0.25-0.33). Findings revealed a better OS in the HPV-positive group vs HPV-negative group in terms of short-term survival. A better trend of DFS was seen in the HPV-positive group vs the HPV-negative group.
