Role of hip injury and giving way in pain exacerbation in hip osteoarthritis: An Internet-based case–crossover study
Arthritis Care & Research May 17, 2019
Fu K, et al. - Via performing an Internet-based case–crossover study, researchers examined how the hip injury/giving way is correlated to hip pain exacerbations in patients with symptomatic hip osteoarthritis (OA). They followed up 252 eligible participants with symptomatic hip OA for 90 days and asked them to complete online questionnaires at baseline and 10-day intervals (control periods). Among these, they analyzed 133 patients (53%) who provided data from both case and control periods. Outcomes revealed a significant relation of hip injury and episodes of the hip giving way, with pain exacerbation in patients with symptomatic hip OA. The burden of pain in these patients could be reduced by preventing exposure to injury.
