Role of closed drain after multi-level posterior spinal surgery in adults: A randomised open-label superiority trial
European Spine Journal Oct 15, 2018
Gubin AV, et al. - Authors evaluated how closed suction drain in multi-level posterior spinal surgery impacts outcomes. For this prospective, open-label, randomized control, superiority trial with parallel design and 1:1 allocation. They included 161 patients undergoing posterior spinal surgery with more than one motion segment at a dedicated spine surgery department randomly allocated into “drain” or “no-drain” groups. Post-operative blood loss and transfusion requirements were reduced with the practice of not using closed surgical drains following multi-level posterior spinal surgery. However, it also has the disadvantage of increased wound soakage and a need for post-operative wound aspirations. Findings suggested careful weighing of the risks of benefits of “drain” vs “no drain.”
