Role of cigarette smoking in the development of ischemic stroke and its subtypes: A Mendelian randomization study
Clinical Epidemiology Aug 18, 2019
Qian Y, Ye D, Wu DJH, et al. - The summary-level genetic association data from the MEGASTROKE consortium (with 438,847 individuals of European ancestry) was used by researchers along with 176 single nucleotide polymorphisms as instrumental variables (identified previously to be linked with smoking in the Study of the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium [n = 518,633]) in order to ascertain whether genetically forecast cigarette smoking was linked to subtypes of ischemic stroke. Genetically predicted smoking was correlated with a greater risk of ischemic stroke and large artery ischemic stroke, but not with the risk of cardioembolic ischemic stroke or small vessel ischemic stroke. The genetic inclination toward smoking was causally related to a greater incidence of large artery ischemic stroke.
