Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Sep 07, 2017
Mittal S, et al. – The researchers conducted this study to investigate the role of age and race in the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in veterans with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was highest among Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs), followed by whites and African Americans (AAs) in a sample of male veterans with chronic HBV infection. Cirrhosis increased HCC risk. Regardless of race, male patients who were older than 40 years and had increased levels of alanine aminotransferase could benefit from HCC surveillance, among patients without cirrhosis.
