Role of adjuvant radiation or re-excision for early stage vulvar squamous cell carcinoma with positive or close surgical margins
Gynecologic Oncology Jun 10, 2019
Bedell SM, et al. - Researchers examined if improvement in recurrence-free survival for stage I vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with either a close or positive surgical margin could be achieved with re-excision or adjuvant radiation. Among a total of 150 patients with stage I vulvar SCC, 47 (31.3%) showed positive or close margins. Additional treatment was reported in 21 (44.6%) patients: 17 of these underwent re-excision and 4 patients underwent vulvar radiation; 26 (55.3%) patients received no additional therapy. As per outcomes, recurrence-free survival or overall survival did not improve with any additional treatment following primary surgical resection in stage IA and IB vulvar SCC.
